Portraiture

The studio portrait may be informal and relaxed or more classic but with a variety of backgrounds and lighting, each can give feeling and distinction to your pictures. However, your home naturally reflects your taste and to some extent your personality, and will sometimes therefore be the ideal environment for your sitting. The familiar atmosphere is particularly suitable for family portraits, and occasionally the garden may provide the setting for a fresh, informal picture. Other locations can provide special and unique environmental portraits. Whatever the environment, a portrait session is fun and enjoyable.

Your suggestions for pictures are welcome and I will gladly advise you on your choice of clothing, make-up, etc. As a general guide for ladies, darker clothes are slimming and long sleeves more flattering. It is usually best to wear something you like, something you feel comfortable in and which makes you feel attractive – but if at all in doubt, please bring a change of clothes.
Few people enjoy being photographed, and teenagers are no exception – if they are happier wearing jeans and a T-shirt, they could perhaps have a few informal pictures taken prior to wearing whatever you prefer. Locations can also provide exciting alternatives to reflect interests and hobbies, which may include the car, motorbike or even the horse!

Babies and young children usually photograph well when wearing coloured rather than white clothes, and bare feet are far more attractive than socks or tights. Try not to make children anxious when preparing them, by telling them they must smile – smiles are lovely when they are natural, but there are beautiful pictures of children with serious expressions. Ideally, we can all just have fun. When making an appointment for your baby, choose a time of day which doesn’t clash with feeding time or when baby is due for a sleep.

I normally allow at least an hour for each sitting. Generally, the fewer people in the room during the session, the better – particularly in the case of small children and animals, who can become very distracted and confused. Please don’t worry about postponing your appointment if someone is unwell – especially children – but do please let us know as early as possible.

I will provide you with a selection of photographs with private pages on-line, for you to study and choose at your leisure. I hope that this advice is useful but if you need more help prior to a sitting please contact me. Portraiture should be personal and unique to reflect your own preferences, so think about it carefully. Something different is great!
I am an experienced, specialist, wedding and portrait photographer. I enjoy my photography and so should the client, and meeting new people in new situations is so interesting.
I hope I'll be meeting you.
